???? 2023 Vintage Notes

If there is such a thing as a breakout year for a farming operation, this year was it. Our region of California had one of the wettest winters on record with rainfall nearly double the historical average. Our fall field work paid off — the grounds were prepared to take the rains which rejuvenated the soil in ways we have never seen. With the season taking shape, we decided to go for an expansion we had slated for 2024: bringing our irrigated footprint up to 262 acres.

We coasted through nursery propagation early enough in the season so that we never broke the germination schedule due to excess heat — a first for us. As the plants were going into the ground, we had a spattering of 100 degree days, causing our crews to shift from planting in the morning to planting in the evening as needed. We never paused and we filled the field before the sun really got going. We had a total of 43 varieties, an absolute handful to deal with.

With half the field returning from previous years, we gained a true barometer on not only quality, but yield. We typically see strong winds when atmospheric pressure experiences large changes, but this year we had a steady cycle without any major events. Water quality at the beginning of the season was immaculate but declined as the season progressed, causing us to rethink our feed schedule to avoid tidal impacts. As September began, early varieties began showing signs of maturation.

We have never seen such early harvest opportunities in all of our years farming in this region. The team was ready and when it was time, the combines rolled into the field and began harvesting by mid September, starting with about two acres per day and ramping slowly until we reached our target capacity of ten. It was nearly a perfect season and the results speak for themselves. The 2023 vintage will redefine Terpene Belt Farms quality and diversity.
